Church: Ascension Lutheran Church
Ascension Lutheran Church in Ames, IA is seeking a Church Organist. We are affiliated with the American Association of Lutheran Churches. We seek an organist to help lead our worship services. We have two worship services each Sunday from September - May and one service each Sunday during the Summer. We also have mid-week services on Wednesday evenings during Advent and Lent.
Our congregation is committed to including both traditional music and hymns led by the organ and praise songs led by our worship team during our services. Our Pastor and Director of Worship and Music work together with the assistance of the Worship and Music Committee to plan worship services that are faithful and inspiring for our congregation.
Our church was formed in the 1960's in downtown Ames and relocated to our new church on the north side of Ames in 2012. We added a state-of-the-art digital organ when we moved into the new church.

Position Details:
Position Purpose
To serve as the Organist enhancing the worship experience to the glory of Almighty God and for the inspiration of His people.
Accountability
The Organist will be accountable to the Senior Pastor as well as the Church Council.
Responsibilities
· To play the organ for all of the worship services during the year (Sundays – 2 during the school year and 1 during the summer, midweek including Advent and Lent, special services including Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve and Day - approximately 120 per year).
· To attend and participate in the Worship and Music Committee meetings (approximately 6 per year). Collaborate with the Worship & Music Committee regarding all phases of the music program.
· Oversee the maintenance of the organ.
· Give one month notice if the position is being vacated. The church shall give the same amount of notice should the position be terminated.
· Maintain a positive working relationship with the people of Ascension Lutheran Church and its staff.
Qualifications
· A personal relationship with Jesus Christ, an understanding of the Bible as God’s inerrant, infallible Word, an understanding of the Lutheran Confessions as a correct interpretation of Scripture, a commitment to the mission and vision of Ascension Lutheran, and an openness to Lutheran style worship.
· Prior experience in accompanying congregational singing within a church setting.
· Punctuality and dependability.
· Being able to work as a member of a team.
· A love for people, and an ability to administrate and lead when needed.
· Flexibility in working with the Pastor, Director of Worship and Music, staff, worship team members, Worship & Music Committee and the congregation.

Position Title: Head Organist

Position Summary:
• The Head Organist position shall consist of approximately 10-15 hours per week which includes personal rehearsal time.
• The Head Organist will have a high degree of competence on the organ and the ability to accompany groups and individuals.
• The Head Organist shall provide organ music for the Sunday Divine Service(s). Our congregation uses the liturgical order outlined in the Lutheran Service Book, Divine Setting III. Strong preference will be given to candidates who are able to play for mid-week services during Advent and Lent, special festivals such as Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, and other midweek services and festivals as requested/negotiated.
• The Head Organist will provide organ music for weddings and funerals (of members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church) whenever possible; and be permitted to receive additional compensation from the parties involved.
• The Head Organist may be asked to accompany the choir during the choir season (September through May).
• The Head Organist will encourage the musical talents and participation of members of the congregation by supporting and facilitating use of the organ (in worship) by other members of the congregation that have received adequate instruction (as approved by Pastor). Special music by others may include prelude, offertory, postlude, choral accompaniment, and/or substitute organists.
• Because Holy Cross is committed to training and preparing new organists to serve the church, the organ shall be made available to other members of the congregation for practice times, with scheduling to be coordinated with the Head Organist.
• The Head Organist will collaborate with the Choir Director and Pastor in coordinating and scheduling choral music for worship.
• The Head Organist will coordinate with Pastor in the selection of music for prelude, offertory, postlude, and any special music, with the ultimate authority for hymn selection belonging to the pastoral office.
• The Head Organist will make note of needed repairs and maintenance, report issues to the Organ Committee and upon approval (if needed), arrange for organ and piano maintenance.
• The Head Organist may provide a list of needs (music, equipment, etc.) for purchase to the Board of Elders for the annual budget.

The manual compass is 61 notes and pedal compass is 32 notes. It is a traditional style console with roll top. Stop keys are located above the top manual. The swell shoes/pedals are balanced and have standard AGO placement. There are adjustable combination pistons. The pedalboard is AGO Standard (concave radiating). An eight bell zimbelstern was added to complete the organ. The bench has been updated to a Phoenix hydraulic adjustable bench.
